Yeah, engineers designed my car so that i have to take off my window wipers, cowles, air filter box and hoses, just so i can change my battery. Also, things were made so well in the past. Stronger, reliable, and long lasting. Would you rather be in the sears tower that has cheaper crap or a building that has hundreds of steel beams?

NASA is a great example of scientists thinking about going into space and theorizing away while engineers and technicians actually made going into space possible. Remove the engineers and technicians and you would be left with a basic Monty Python skit on replay loop.

I have worked in construction and fabrication for about half my life now and have been saying that the less you use a tape measure, the more accurate you will be. That statement seems stupid to those uninitiated in the fundamentals of geometry. As I progress in life and in my career, I have found the compass, straight edge, and pencil to be the most practical tools in my arsenal. Instead of thinking about somethings length in Imperial or Metric, think in terms of length being one. There is quite a bit of philosophy on the subject as well, and I suggest all those that create their world through the built environment study and meditatate on the compass, square, and the number 1.

Directed evolution has been used by humans to develop specific traits in plants, birds, animals etc since before recorded history. Arnold's application to enzymes may have won her a nobel prize, but the basic process has been understood by farmers, dog breeders and mate-seekers for years.

Interesting that Masons - 'Freemasons' - are still (though not so much anymore) regarded as dangerous mystics who somehow pose a threat to established faith. In the modern age science has become a religion. It's very common for people to proclaim that they believe in 'science', more as a political or cultural statement than as an intellectual statement.

That goofy music was unnecessary and mainly distracting. You are explaining one of marvels of technological innovation of the 20th century. Why cheapen it's impact with cheap hollywood background music. People will tune in because of their curiosity. Don't use this music to denigrate the message. Otherwise, video was to the point and this viewer had no idea there was so much advanced technology in an otherwise forgettable tool

I feel like somewhere along the line, creativity got stolen from engineers. Instead of designing beautiful marvels, instead, we design rigid and simple things that work effectively at the lowest budget possible.

Im here because I dropped my half full Coke can, and it didn't spill because it landed on the rounded edge and that gave me the split second to catch it. If it had rigid edges like a cup that would have been all over my white ottoman!

My father and a partner started an injection molding plant in the late 60s. His partner was a genius and designed and built the machines. They were able to make plastic parts with small screened sections, used in the automobile industry for washer fluid pickups and the medical industry for filters used to catch kidney stones, as well as small parts for other industries.

The terminology is all wrong at one point. Betamax didn't lose to JVC as he says. Betamax is a format, JVC and Sony are companies. Betamax lost to VHS, another videocassette format, no matter who the manufacturer of the recorder. Also comparing how the cassette bays open on these two particular recorders is ridiculous and has nothing to do with anything!
